I have to go to the Yukon soon. I live in a pretty temperate area and have never in my life experienced anything that cold.
Tips? Tricks?

buddy...
go buy a proper jacket. Now
also, scrafs, a hat and gloves. thermal pant lines (or fleece lined jeans) work great too

That’ll look good in front of my client.

Yeah. Gonna need to fire up the expense account

A business trip. Are you a fur buyer?

You don’t know much about the Yukon at all do you. tsk tsk tsk. EVERYONE has their hands down their pants. You don’t want to be the only one who doesn’t do you? You’d look foolish!

It’s top secret government work. I’d have to kill everyone on Oppo.
JK, I’m an insurance adjuster. So, I gotta go where the claims are. I can’t really say more than that.

So, somebody wrecked their snow machine. Got it. Have a safe trip.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 13:19 |

lol, it’s a little more complex than that. I do larger losses/specialty lines

Best way to stay warm during cold weather is to book a trip to the Caribbean and wait it out
![]() 02/09/2018 at 13:23 |
|
Exciting! That’s a bucket list item of mine but I’m on the east coast. I’d like to drive up the dalton highway to prudhoe bay to see Alaska and also go beyond the arctic circle.

So, someone burned down a shed full of snow machines after a maple syrup bender?
![]() 02/09/2018 at 13:28 |

It was just a really pissed off moose. Levelled the entire town.

a toque, scarf and gloves/mittens
a good jacket and you should be set.
The cold is very livable when you are prepared for it.
Was -30c before windchill here this morning, but having a block heater, remote starter, heated seats and wheel make it just a bit easier.
-30c and colder you get the square wheels when you first take off.

Wait until August?
Otherwise hit MEC and get some good gear.
Option B is Mark’s and gear up like a oilpatch kid.

The only advise I have, was told to me by someone from Wisconsin.
“You don’t get used to the cold, you just get used to being cold.”
Changed my whole attitude about cold weather to be honest.

A good coat, socks and gloves can do wonders.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 13:42 |

I think MEC and suit up like I am going on an expedition with no budget. No can do on the wait. I should have gone already, but... I like being warm.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 13:43 |

Yeah! I think I actually get to go on an ice road. Should be neat.
Some debate on whether we are driving from Whitehorse or taking a Helicopter.

best thread I’ve read on oppo in a while now.

I recommend the Sanka approach. Bring flexible luggage and put every piece of clothing on that you have...then put the fucking bag on.

It’s only about -20F (-30C). What are you worried about? Oh, you have to go outside? Yeah, fuck that.

Get a down parka. The longer the better. It has to at least cover your butt.
Best $150 I ever spent: https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/88169?page=trail-model-down-hooded-parka-mens-regular
There are warmer/nicer ones for more money, especially if the company is paying.
Also mittens. Fuck gloves, you want mittens. Unless you actually need to work with your hands in the cold, mittens are much warmer.
A warm hat goes without saying.
And thick wool socks plus winter boots.

I’m literally going to die. Worst I’ve ever experinenced was maybe -10 c when I was a little kid?

Kickass.

Whoa, $1650? I guess this will be a good test to see if my company values my life or not.

oooooh man the ice road will be wild!
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:07 |

It’s hit that low here before but it’s extremely rare and nobody who doesn’t have to goes outside. Frozen nose hair sucks.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:14 |
|
Go big or Go home, amirite?
I like poofy down;
Then boots;
Don’t forget;
$1000 should get you set with good gear, and it will last forever.
I still have most of my field gear I bought ten years ago- overkill for what I do nowadays but it’s really nice to have when you need them.

I was in -16C outside last week. I’m from south Texas so I was not prepared at all for it from a mental stand point. I had enough layers to survive but my hands and took seemingly forever to recover. I feel for you and hope for your survival.

Bundle up, take a few extra packets of hand warmers with you.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:16 |

well i live across the border in (typically colder) fairbanks; we’ve been sitting at -20F for about 3 weeks straight now. Its not that bad, really. if youre going to be outside for extended periods some carhartt bibs and a puffy coat and warm boots are a necessity. If you’re just going to be going from car to business to car to hotel you dont really need any “special” gear. A decent coat, hat and gloves. Maybe some long johns on under.

i did 10,000 miles on the dalton this past year. Its cool, yes, but theres better highways to drive with less traffic. Though in alaska, none of those go above the arctic circle. Prudhoe bay is a man camp, not a tourist destination, and you can’t see the arctic ocean unless you pay the oil companies for a tour. I reccomend instead taking the dempster highway and the newly opened inuvik tuktoyatuk highway.

business trip needs business suit.

Duly noted! That’s a ton of driving in an unusual place, you should make a post about it when you have the time...

-20F? I’m fucked
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:22 |
|
Ah yes! You were in Alberta! How was the trip?
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:23 |
|
Long Johns, layers, and stay out of the wind when possible. Face coverings are a good idea if it’s really cold.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:25 |
|
well right now dawson is at -40 (doesnt matter if its C or F at that temp), so could be much worse. When will you be there? The toughest sled dog race in the world is finishing in whitehorse starting in, oh, 4 days or so.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:26 |
|
-30 right now where I have to go. I would say that is very cold.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:30 |
|
It was good! I had to work around some equipment that was 75C so I experienced quite a temperature change from freezing to sweating and then freezing the sweat. Would have loved to have more time on my own and might be going back to Alberta soon for another job.

i briefly looked through my photos and don’t have much from the road but once my field season ramps back up in april i will be back out there, and will snap some pics and do a post. in the meantime, heres the dalton about 50 miles south of prudhoe in june.

You sure there wasn’t a riot after the local Tim Horton’s ran out of maple glazed donuts, and they just blamed it on a moose?
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:37 |

Nearest timmies from where I am going is 250km
Nearest anything from where I am going is 250km
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:38 |

For you, yes. Like I said, layer up, keep out of the wind, and you’ll be good. Also, get a thick fur hat instead of a toque.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 14:42 |
|
It’s just short ice road/ice bridge over a river, but should be cool nonetheless.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 15:00 |

Awesome, that looks like another planet.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 15:04 |

Don’t go in the winter. Layers. Sun glasses, snow blindness is a real thing. Real winter boots, none of that fake Ugg style crap. Hydrate. Don’t go in the winter. If you are doing physical work, remove layer so you don’t sweat. Being wet on any layer is bad. Don’t go in the winter.
Did I mention don’t go in the winter?

No choice!! :(
![]() 02/09/2018 at 15:21 |

you’re no fun
![]() 02/10/2018 at 12:25 |

i agree, but im talking about the yukon quest. Colder, with longer distances between checkpoints, and less help allowed. Yukon quest is the tougher of the two 1000 mile sled dog races in north america.

As a Canadian, I should be ashamed that I haven’t heard of it. I should go repent and watch Iron Will.
